Driftwood Sculpture

Since the medium is the messenger, it is the role of art to convey the artist’s message.
My message is for a new spirituality.
Spring is a time for renewal. It is also a time when the remnants of the past lay strewn along northern beaches like bones bleached by water and sun. Like bones, they can be pieced together to form vibrant structures possessing a separate voice or soul.
These weathered pieces of driftwood have a beauty and animate quality that reinforce the notion of a basic design in all nature.
In my own work many of the pieces have a recurring man/animal mythological theme. Once you establish the uniqueness of each found piece, the sculpture takes on its own form with its very own story to tell.
This story gains another dimension when the pieces are back home on the beach. Captured on film in the ever-changing light of one of the world’s best sunsets, each photo represents a moment of celebration.
